British number one cyclist Jenny Copnall will be fronting a major sports education day for 30 schools across the region at the University of Bedfordshire on Thursday 1 March.
The mountain bike cross country racer is a Sporting Champion for Sport England, who goes into schools and the community to inspire youngsters.
The one-day regional conference is one of 32 Top Link events taking place across the country, which are part of a government programme designed to encourage young people to get involved as sports volunteers, organisers, leaders, administrators and officials.
It’s takes place at the Vauxhall Conference Centre in Luton and will bring together hundreds of secondary school children from schools across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, to equip them with the skills and knowledge to run sports festivals for primary school children in their communities during the spring or summer term.
The event is being organised by a team of University sports management students. Alex Stewart, Tourism, Leisure and Sports Management lecturer, said: “We are proud to be hosting the event for the second year running and to have the opportunity to engage students from across the region in a meaningful way, to help Government aims to increase the number of children doing four or more hours of sport a week by 2010.
“Our students will be totally responsible for the organisation and delivery of the Top Link conference, the planning, the preparation, setting up the venue on the day, organising the sessions, and spending time with students and encouraging them to make their own decisions.
“It’s really relevant to their degree, it’s fantastic for their skills, CV and really puts theory into practice.”
