A Dance Lecturer from the University of Bedfordshire has returned from New York where he worked and studied with some of the city’s top contemporary dance artists.
Senior Lecturer James Hewison made the visit thanks to a grant from the Arts Council’s prestigious Artist: Space, Time, Money scheme.
The award was made in recognition of his outstanding contribution to dance practice over the last 15 years and has enabled him to concentrate on professional development in contemporary dance and to bring best practice techniques back to the University to strengthen teaching and research.
During the trip, he attended workshops and classes at the studios of renowned dance artists and teachers including Trisha Brown, Mark Morris, Alvin Ailey and Susan Klien.
Mr Hewison said: “It was really exciting to learn from some of the most influential contemporary dancers of the last century who helped create the post-modern dance movement, and to visit some of the major sites for dance practice in New York.

The grant has allowed him to undertake a range of national and international research, training and professional development projects. He is also scheduled to train at professional arts and academic institutions in Brussels, as well as run workshops with highly regarded dance professionals in the UK.
In September Mr Hewison will be teaching an innovative new dance course being offered by the University, a BA (Hons) in Dance and Professional Practice. The course focuses on professional practice and employability within the dance profession, enabling students to manage their own touring company, deliver workshops in schools and colleges, and explore the many career options now available to dancers.
Mr Herison is the Associate Director of the Bedford-based professional dance company, Ersatz Dance. Ersatz has forged an international reputation for high-quality contemporary dance and performance practice over the past decade.
