Cricket team with trophy

Luton cricketer Monty Panesar may be creating headlines with his fast bowling against the West Indies, but closer to home, the University of Bedfordshire’s cricket team has also been enjoying winning matches and a league promotion.

The team played a knock-out series this season in the British Universities Sports Association’s (BUSA) South Eastern Fifth Division, winning all their matches and securing promotion to the Fourth League.

During the season, the Bedfordshire boys came up against the University of London’s first team (Queen Mary), Roehampton University’s first team and Imperial College London’s second team

Captain Faisal Khan (right in photo) said: “We were confident going into this league this year, as we had trained hard and our squad had been strengthened with the arrival of several new players.

“We’re now really looking forward to playing in a higher division against more competitive teams such as Greenwich, Kent and Reading. We’ll be flying the flag for Bedfordshire no matter who we come up against.”

The achievement was helped by all-rounder Suleman Khan (left in photo) receiving coaching from high-profile South-African cricketer Shaun Pollock and Australian selection panellist Daryll Foster. Suleman worked with his team mates to implement the techniques he learned into the training sessions.
