Kauno Diena newspaper after redesign

Creative companies from across the eastern region are being invited to get up close and personal with the budding artists, film makers and designers of tomorrow.

The work of 200 students will be on display at a special preview of the University of Bedfordshire’s annual School of Media, Art and Design Degree Show, which takes place at the Luton campus on June 15. The main event opens to the public on 21 June.

On display will be the dozens of creations including that of third year Graphic Design student, Ausra Kupliauskaite, who has in recent weeks landed a job as the main designer on a Lithuanian daily newspaper.

She has given the paper a new design which is now going into production. The design also forms the work of her final major project for her degree.

Ausra said: “For my major project I got the opportunity to redesign one of Lithuania’s main newspapers, Kauno Diena. Kauno is the second biggest city in Lithuania and it’s very popular. In recent times, famous editors from the main Lithuanian national newspapers have come to work there.”

Hermis Capital, the company who own Kauno Diena, has also recently bought the main daily newspaper of Lithuania’s harbour city, Klaipeda. Ausra added: “I’ve been employed by them as the only designer of all these newspapers, straight from the Graphic Design degree here at the University of Bedfordshire.

“There have been many problems for me to solve as a designer. For example, there has to be as many stories and advertisements as possible, even on the front page. On the other hand, the editors also want it to look contemporary and modern. So the hardest part of redesigning this newspaper was to balance the ‘conservative’ and the ‘modern’.”

The new design will be published on 1 July, but before the degree show opens, Ausra is going to Lithuania to finish the work. “I’m also meeting the designer of the New York Times there, whose roots are in Lithuania,” she said.

“I’m very excited that I am playing such an important part in these big changes in the newspaper’s history, and I hope that conservative Lithuanians who are afraid of any changes for the daily, won’t be shocked too much!”

Sarah Waller, Creative Arts Sector Manager for the University, said: “The invitation to creative companies to come to the School of Media, Art and Design Degree Show is a rare opportunity for people in business to critique the work done by our students and to get an insight into what goes on at the University.

“Recent research estimates that by 2016, half of the UK’s businesses will be within the creative sector and the University aims to produce students who will be able to fill the skills gap in this industry. This kind of event, where companies are able to see exactly what our students are capable of, is a good stepping stone in this direction.”

Some 500 companies from across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and North London are being invited to the event where photography, fine art, graphic design, fashion and film will be on show.

In recent weeks, the School of Media, Art and Design has been ranked third in the country for its courses by the Guardian newspaper.
