Companies and individuals from around Bedfordshire have shown their support for local students by helping to raise thousands of pounds for the University of Bedfordshire’s bursary and scholarship fund.

Generous bosses, employees and other guests raised the cash at the first University of Bedfordshire Grand Summer Ball which was held in the grounds of the Putteridge Bury Campus on Saturday (9 June).

The glamorous black-tie affair was organised by the University’s new Development and Alumni Relations Office in a bid to get local support for students who encounter financial difficulties during their studies.

Head of Development and Alumni Relations, Naomi Wynter-Vincent, said it was a fantastic evening that surpassed her expectations. “The tickets sold out well in advance of the event and the generosity shown by everyone on the night was tremendous, really highlighting the support for our students and the new University.

“This money is a lifeline to students and can make the difference between completing their degrees and having to quit.”

The Ball was supported by the Chair of the Development Board, Derek Ludlow MBE, and the Ludlow Group, who worked around the clock to promote the ball to local businesses and encourage people to donate prizes.

The evening featured music by Bedfordshire band, Chapter Eight, and members of the University’s resident orchestra, Symphonia Academica.

Guests snapped up more than 1,500 raffle tickets and went head-to-head in a silent auction for a number of prizes including the chance to drive a Porsche at Millbrook Proving Ground, a weekend for two in a five-star hotel, a top-of-the range Toshiba laptop and a gliding lesson.

In his speech to guests, Professor Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor, thanked all those who gave so generously and spoke about the difference this fund will make to students’ lives.

He said: “We want to continue offering opportunities to students whose only obstacle to completing their degree is finance. We have many wonderful stories of students whose lives have been transformed by education, and we will continue to do this thanks to the generous contributions of those who are here tonight.”

Sponsors of the Ball included Skills Train, Elite Hotels and Morellis Ltd. All the proceeds raised will go directly to the bursary and scholarship fund.
