Students who volunteer in the local community were recognised this week at
a special awards ceremony at the University
of Bedfordshire Students’ Union, where dozens gathered to hear inspiring stories
about the impact volunteers have made on the local community.
The event, designed to coincide with the national Student Volunteering England (SVE) Gold Awards, showcases outstanding student volunteers.
Seventeen students
were presented with awards by the Dean of Students, Richard Harris and Aletheia
Bligh-Flower, a Youth Volunteer Advisor from Student Volunteering England.
Richard said: “The work the
students carry out helps the University fulfil its mission to serve the local,
regional and indeed international communities. Their positive achievements sometimes
go un-noticed, but I’m delighted to present them with these awards and commend
them for giving up so much of their time.”
Receiving SVE ‘Gold Awards’ on the evening were Edward Coker and Neven
Tadrous, who helped set up a Red Cross centre at the University - the first
sustained Red Cross centre to be based at a UK university. Yolande Riva volunteered at BlackBright
magazine where she has contributed to marketing campaigns and set up their own
Myspace account as well as securing some key advertising.

Also congratulating the winners was Community Projects Co-ordinator, Andrea Thorogood. She said: “Our students have helped improve the way of life for people all around the world. More than £2,000 has been raised and 10,000 books have been collected to help schoolchildren in Tanzania. Locally, our Hillborough School mentors have worked with children to provide personal and academic support as they prepare to move from primary to secondary school.
“We now have more student volunteers than ever before. More than 300 students are registered on our
volunteering programme. In Luton, our volunteers have given thousands of hours to
improve the town and the lives of the people who live here.”
