St George's Square

The winners of the Luton First photography competition received their prizes today (21 June) at a special presentation at the Silverjet Lounge, London Luton Airport, where the winning photos were projected onto a giant screen.

The competition was set up by the promotional group to get local people to capture their town and what they love about it the most. The group’s aim is to promote the town as a good place to live, work and have fun and wanted to show this through a collection of photos.

Comedian and actor, Kate Robbins, presented the winners with their prizes and congratulated each of the winners for their “excellent” photographs.

The images, submitted by people of all ages, captured people enjoying life at home, in the workplace and at leisure.

Speaking about the entries, Chair of Luton First, Patricia Murchie, said:

Rev Nick Bell

“This is the first time we’ve held a photography competition so we weren’t sure what to expect. What struck us was the number of entries from people who weren’t born and raised in Luton but have made it their home in recent years. They wanted to share their impressions of the town with us and have come up with some fantastic images.”

The winners of each category were:

  • Luton Living – Maksim Kalanep for his ‘timeless’ image of the redeveloped St George’s Square. (top)
  • Luton Having Fun – Estian Wagenaar for his photo of a youngster ‘hanging out’ in Wigmore Valley Park. (middle)
  • Luton at Work – Ben Hodson for his photo of Reverend Nick Bell at St Mary’s Church (bottom)
  • The overall winner was Estian Wagennar.

Each winner received a glass trophy from AW Transport and Mall Arndale vouchers worth £50. The overall winner received a digital camera from the University of Bedfordshire.
