The University of Bedfordshire’s career service has been branded one of the best in the country following a recent quality assessment by Matrix.

Matrix is the quality standard for careers centres across the UK designed to improve and reward organisations that are committed to excellence and continual improvement.

It accredited the University’s new Centre for Personal and Career Development just three months after opening its doors.

The Centre provides access to a wealth of information and expertise to help students and graduates, in both Luton and Bedford, decide the best way forward after university.

Acting Head of Centre, Mark Diggle, said: “This is a wonderful start for us in our new premises which allows a whole range of services to be available under one roof.

“Students can use the Centre for up to three years after graduating to help them explore their options, realise what employers are looking for and show them the value of their academic studies in employment related terms.

“Graduates are then able to manage and take control of their careers in the world of work, being proactive rather than just sitting back and waiting for something to happen.”

Assessors highlighted:

  • The success of the Job Shop which helps students and graduates find full and part-time work while studying
  • The partnerships the Centre has forged with community groups via its volunteering programme
  • The level of online support, including the Career Management Skills (CMS) programme which prepares students for interviews
  • And the way the University has embedded employability in the curriculum.

The Matrix accreditation comes five months after the University’s careers service was commended by the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) for incorporating skills to make students more employable into degree courses.

The University introduced Personal Development Planning modules to degree programmes which cover CV writing, filling in application forms, interview techniques, and learning how employers recruit and find suitable vacancies.

The University is keen to hear what careers recent graduates are working in. Please visit dlhe.hesa.ac.uk/survey/ to let us know. For further information about the University’s Centre for Personal and Career Development visit www.beds.ac.uk/careers
