A lively public debate about energy sources will be hosted by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts (RSA) at the University of Bedfordshire on Friday 30 March.

A panel of experts have been invited to take part in discussing the pros and cons of nuclear and renewable energy sources. These include:

  • Andrew Blowers - a member of the Government's Committee on Radioactive Waste Management and Professor of Social Sciences at the Open University
  • John Constable - Director of Policy and Research for the Renewable Energy Foundation
  • Malcolm Grimston - Associate Fellow at Chatham House, which is one of the world's leading organisations for the analysis of international issues, where he has investigated the future of civil nuclear energy. He is also a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Environmental Technology at Imperial College, London
  • David Elliott - Professor of Technology Policy at the Open University and Co-Director of the University’s Energy and Environment Research Unit

Professor Blowers, who is helping to organise the event said: “The issues of energy supply and climate change are now being taken more seriously than ever. The world's dependence on fossil fuels is widely acknowledged to be a major cause of rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and there is an urgent need to develop energy sources with lower environmental impact.

“There is much debate surrounding what part, if any, nuclear should play and whether renewables are a practical or acceptable solution. The panel will argue from different positions to provide the basis of discussions at the University of Bedfordshire. It promises to be an informative and lively debate.”

Tickets cost £5 and doors open at the University’s Polhill Campus, in Polhill Avenue, Bedford, at 6pm. To book a place please contact gladys.jones@virgin.net
