Journalism and Media Production students from the University of Bedfordshire have played a key role in developing crisis procedures at London Luton Airport.
The Airport’s Communications Team and senior management regularly test strategies to ensure swift and effective emergency response. Bedfordshire Police and Fire Service communications staff also joined the crisis management team.
In a dramatic but imaginary plane crash scenario student journalists and film crews, with broadcasters from Chiltern fm, provided media realism. Air traffic was unaffected and passengers unaware of the drama being enacted.
London Luton Airport’s Sales & Marketing Manager Jo-Ann Canevali said “The students’ input was fantastic; we were really impressed by their tenacity and determination to follow the story. We are hugely grateful to everyone who participated for making the exercise real for us and really testing the team, the students demonstrated a very high level of professionalism. It is great to see different organisations collaborating in this way; we hope this will become an annual event.”
Journalism Lecturer Deena Ingham was delighted with the exercise: “Experience such as this is invaluable. We are very grateful to the Airport team and their consultants for the opportunity, and welcomed the chance to play an ongoing role in developing a crucial emergency strategy.”
During the exercise the team at the heart of the operation faced hundreds of telephone calls, and a barrage of media questions, interviews and demands in a relentless stream designed to test technologies and human responses.
