University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, has been elected to the chair of CMU Universities Group, the largest of the UK’s university interest groups.
Professor Ebdon takes over from Middlesex University Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Driscoll, who is stepping down in July 2007 after four years in the post. Professor Ebdon will formally take-over in July 2007 but will be working closely with Professor Driscoll and CMU’s Chief Executive, Pam Tatlow, as Chair-elect.
Professor Ebdon said: “I am delighted to have been elected to chair this vital group and continue Michael’s excellent work.
“CMU represents a key group of universities which, together, have the largest percentage of students from non-traditional backgrounds, including mature and part-time students but are also in the forefront of delivering the applied research, innovation and knowledge partnerships that are absolutely key to the economy.”
Professor Ebdon was a popular choice among CMU vice chancellors. He has an outstanding record as an academic and a leader.
His research interests are in environmental analytical chemistry and his contributions to sensor development and understanding of the importance of trace elements in the environment have led to more than 250 publications and several awards.
At Luton he instigated a merger with the former De Montfort campus at Bedford to create the new University of Bedfordshire in August 2006 and has overseen a revival in the University’s fortunes.
He said: “I am proud to have had such an impact at Bedfordshire but also believe that CMU Member institutions have a superb record and are key to delivering higher education not only in the UK but also internationally and that they play a crucial role in changing the lives of thousands of students. It is absolutely vital that all political parties and stakeholders are fully informed about their impact as universities and recognise it in policy-terms.’
No stranger to political lobbying, Professor Ebdon has been an active member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and can be expected to bring this experience to his new role in CMU.
