A top Government official has praised the University of Bedfordshire for its record rise in application figures.

Director of Student Finance Strategy at the Department for Education and Skills, Michael Hipkins, met with Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon in Luton on Friday (23 March).

Mr Hipkins said it’s a great achievement for a new university to have received so much interest from potential students, especially reaching out to students from non-traditional backgrounds and for making a difference to their lives.

Figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) released last month show applications to Bedfordshire have risen by a staggering 41.2 per cent compared with the same period last year, putting it top of the table among all universities.

Professor Ebdon said: “There has been enormous interest in the new University since its launch on 1 August 2006. Our vocational courses are particularly popular, and our new bursaries and scholarships scheme is one of the most generous on offer.”
