Sports conference attracts international speakers

A conference aimed at sports injury specialists took place at the University of Bedfordshire over the weekend.

Various issues facing the sports therapy industry were tackled by internationally renowned speakers including:

  • Dr Cathy Ortega - President of the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT) and Olympic physical therapist, spoke about muscle energy
  • Dr Richard Budgett – Chief Medical Officer for the 2012 Games, discussed Olympic and Paralympic medical provision
  • Dr Richard Demont - President of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, talked about his experience providing medical coverage for 10,000 athletes
  • Rob Granter – Director of the Australasian College of Soft Tissue Therapy, spoke about preventing injury and enhancing career fulfilment
  • Gene Verel - Chair of the National Athletic Trainers Association’s International Committee and Vice-President of WFATT, discussed the challenge of treating dancers

The three-day event was organised in conjunction with the Sports Massage Association, the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT), and sportEX publications, for the fifth annual conference.

Tim Paine, Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Bedfordshire, said: “We were very pleased to host such an important event in the sports therapy calendar, which attracted more than 150 sports massage and sports injury rehabilitators from across the UK.

“They were able to exchange knowledge and share insights on their specific skills, as well as demonstrating techniques they had learnt at the state-of-the-art sport science labs at the new £8million Physical Education and Sport Science Centre.”

The University was ranked 12th in the country for its sports courses in the latest Guardian league table.
