A former British number one elite bike racer has been testing new hi-tech equipment at the University of Bedfordshire.

Leda Cox, who competes for Italian Elite Road team Saccarelli-EMU-Marsciano, visited the University’s Division of Sport last week to help test a new indoor training bike.

The £15,000 SRM bike is designed to measure power and fitness and Leda used the opportunity to gain some initial testing results as she prepares for the start of the Elite Road race season next month.

She said: “This is the model that all the top cyclists are using, including the British Cycling team. The students are very lucky to have access to such top facilities.

“I hope to come back to the University for further tests throughout the year to monitor my performance and moderate my training regime.”

Students will use the bike to carry out physiological and biomechanical testing to help analyse performance and movement as part of the Sports Science, Sports Therapy and Coaching degrees.

Dr Lynette Singleton, Lab Manager, said: “We are delighted that Leda could visit our Luton campus to help calibrate our new indoor trainer. The University has strong links with local athletes and sports teams and we’re looking forward to welcoming her back in the very near future.

“The Division is committed to providing industry-standard equipment for our students and we continue to invest in new facilities.”

The University has ongoing partnerships with British Basketball Cup winners, the Marshall MK Lions, Bedford Blues Rugby Club and the Estonian National Rugby team. Staff and students also provide sports massages for competitors at the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs.
