A new choreography competition is being launched by the University of Bedfordshire to discover some of the region’s most talented dancers.
The competition is open to dancers aged between 14 and 19, in groups of between three and seven. Schools, dance groups and companies can apply before the closing date on 29 February.
To enter the first round, entrants will be asked to send in a DVD submission of their work. Those selected will go through to the final on 25 June where they will be judged by a panel of dance experts from the University.
The winners will receive the ‘Choreography Cup’ and will be eligible for free places on the annual week-long Gifted and Talented Dance Summer School at the University, in July.
Principal Lecturer in Dance Education Maggie Killingbeck said: “The choreography competition will provide a wonderful opportunity for schools and dance organisations to share and celebrate their work. It promises to be a very exciting occasion.
“The judges will be evaluating the choreographies in relation to the communication of dance, sophistication of form and structure, appropriate use of sound and design, and originality and innovation. The winning dance group will be able to develop their talents even further at the summer school.”
The University of Bedfordshire is part of Excellence East, the gifted and talented excellence hub for the East of England, in partner with Cambridge University, Anglia Ruskin and the University of East Anglia. This Government programme offers additional learning opportunities to bright young people.
The University also runs a Dance and Professional Practice degree where students have access to two large dance studios, a new 280-seat theatre performance space, and staff with extensive professional experience teaching Dance and Performing Arts.
