The arrival of the Chinese New Year has been celebrated in style by students at the University of Bedfordshire with an evening of song, dance and martial arts.
More than 100 guests gathered at Luton Central Baptist Church where students donned traditional costumes to mark the ‘Year of the Rat’.
The annual event which is run by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University brings together students and members of the local Chinese community to celebrate.

Harry Wang, Regional Director at the University attends the event every year. He commented: “This year we were especially pleased to welcome academics from International College Beijing where many of our students have come from. It’s wonderful to see them celebrating the New Year in such a traditional way considering they are so far away from home.”
Among the performers were Advertising and Marketing student Hu Dan, who sang Beijing opera; Chen Chen, who is studying Accounting, played a traditional Chinese instrument; and Lin Chenxi, also studying Advertising and Marketing, performed a martial arts display.

On the night students from the University’s Chaplaincy made a plea to help raise money for those left stranded by the recent snow storms that caused chaos in China, as thousands travelled home to celebrate the New Year. Young children were among those left without shelter in sub-zero temperatures.
