Latest figures confirm that Beds is best in East of England

Official figures released today (14 February) confirm that more students are applying to the University of Bedfordshire than any other university in the East of England.

The University has been placed fifth in the country for student applications by the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), whose latest figures show Bedfordshire with an increase of 9.1 per cent on last year, the highest increase in the region.

Last month, Bedfordshire bosses predicated an increase of seven per cent on 2007, but this latest report reveals a further two per cent rise.

“This confirms our place among the best new universities in the country,” says Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon. “We saw a record rise in applications last year – the highest in the country - and these figures show this wasn’t a one-off. We were anticipating up to a 17 per cent decrease as students can now only choose five courses instead of six when making their selection. Some universities have seen a downturn in applications but we appear to have avoided this and come out top in the region.

“Our growth continues following a phenomenal year which saw us short-listed for the University of the Year Award by the Times Higher. And we are making huge investments in our facilities to ensure we attract more students year-on-year. Having completed a £34m investment programme at our Bedford campus, plans are now in place to transform out Luton campus with an £80m redevelopment programme.”

UCAS has reported a national rise of 6.7 per cent on 2007, with 26,517 more people applying for university courses in the UK this year.
