A new course designed to train community professionals to manage crime and anti-social behaviour has been hailed a success after 15 delegates completed their training.

The University of Bedfordshire is the first institution to run the Introductory Certificate in Neighbourhood Management. The course brings together local government bodies, the police and community action groups to explore new ways of building safe neighbourhoods, as the Government rolls out Neighbourhood Policing across England and Wales.

Lead Member for Neighbourhood Policing at Bedfordshire Police Authority, Colleen Atkins MBE, said: “I enjoyed the opportunity to network with a range of people who can influence improvements within communities. The course highlighted that key agencies can learn together and develop new skills relevant to their day-to-day work, whether it's frontline services or at a strategic level. Understanding neighbourhood management is the responsibility of us all, not just one organisation.”

The Introductory Certificate in Neighbourhood Management has been developed in partnership with the National Policing Improvement Agency and accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

The training offers participants a chance to gain a qualification and be introduced to the key concepts and practices in effective neighbourhood management, including community engagement, partnership working, anti-social behaviour and collaborative problem-solving.

Janet Montgomery, Trust Secretary for the Dallow Learning Community Centre added: “The course taught me how to focus on local issues and how to work with other organisations to tackle sustainability issues. We can use the skills gained to improve community regeneration projects. It is vital to the work I do and I want my volunteers to access this training so they too feel more confident and empowered to build strong community networks."

The second cohort is already in training and the Introductory Certificate in Neighbourhood Management will soon be rolled out at other colleges and universities across the country.
