Thomson Travel, Enterprise and the Royal Bank of Scotland were just some of the companies who came to the University of Bedfordshire last week to promote their graduate employment schemes to final year students, as well as giving top tips on how to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs.

Local businesses and organisations including The Chamber and Luton Borough Council also came to meet students at the University’s ‘Careers in Business Conference’.

The conference gives students the chance to meet with business experts in small groups to ask questions and gain advice about succeeding in the graduate employment market and on graduate employment programmes.

Antony Childs, Human Resources Manager at Thomson Travel said: “The event was very well attended. It provided us with a great opportunity to meet with a lot of students who were very interested in developing careers within the travel industry.

“I was impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of students at the University. We discussed potential opportunities for graduates within Thomson , and as a result we have received a large number of applications from interested students”

Last year, the University of Bedfordshire was highlighted as having one of the best careers services in the country. They were commended for helping students and graduates find employment; the partnerships the Centre has built with community and voluntary groups; and also the way the University has embedded employability in the curriculum.

Event Organiser and Careers Adviser, Ajaz Hussian said: “The Conference was attended by a record number of students and we hope to run further careers conferences throughout the year.

“The University is increasing its links with local and national businesses to provide our students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, which will make them more employable.”

Earlier this year, the University ran similar careers events for Law and Accounting students and plans to run further conferences in other subject areas.
