Schoolchildren from Lea Manor High School have been invited to perform alongside a leading regional dance troupe thanks to special coaching sessions from a University of Bedfordshire student.

Street Dance Productions, which specialises in street and hip hop dance classes, invited the Luton schoolchildren to perform in their street dance show on 15 March after seeing one of their rehearsals, lead by University student Ingrida Bertasiute.

The 21-year-old, who is in the final year of an Advertising and Marketing Communications degree, trained for six years at the Kacinsko Choreography School, and later for five years at Plazma Streetdance School in Lithuania. She was inspired to dance by her mum who enjoyed dancing.

Ingrida has been working with the Lea Manor children in after-school sessions to encourage young people to understand and appreciate dance and healthy living.

She said: “I’ve been working with the students for three hours a week at after school classes for the last four months. They are aged between 13 and15 years and have been working really hard.

“The dance, inspired by ancient Egypt, involves a lot of fast arm movements with unexpected freezes. It is not a common dance, so I thought it would be interesting to try it with the class as they may not have seen this style before. The students were unsure about performing at first, but as soon as they began to learn the moves and see the dance develop, they really enjoyed themselves, which is what I wanted to achieve.”

Street Dance Productions, based in Stevenage, runs dance classes and workshops

for adults and children across the region. They also work with local schools to provide street dance training, as well as providing advice on the benefits of regular exercise.

The Lea Manor students will be performing at Luton Library Theatre as part of the Dance Nation production on 15 March 2008. Doors open at 7.00pm and tickets are £10 and can be ordered online at www.streetdanceproductions.co.uk
