The diverse and exciting range of research projects being undertaken by staff at the University of Bedfordshire’s seven research institutes have been displayed at a special poster exhibition.
The ‘Research Poster Day’ which ran last week at the University’s Luton campus, featured subjects ranging from social work, cryobiology and business, to health, media and the creative arts.
Guest judge Chris Barnes, Chief Executive of Bedfordshire and Luton Economic Development Partnership, along with the University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, awarded prizes for the best entries. Awards went to exhibits that attracted instant attention and clearly captured the message of the research.
First prize went to Ali Tomlin for her research titled ‘Diabetes, Self-management and Cognition’. Second prize was awarded to Haider Al-Khateeb for research centred on authentication mechanisms for web applications. Third prize went to Hamdan Dhanhani for his project on responses to natural hazards in the UAE.

An additional prize for ‘Research Impact’, sponsored by the University’s business unit, the Knowledge Hub, was introduced for the first time this year to recognise research that held particular value for the wider community. The award went to Xiaoxiao Xu for ‘Internet Usage in the Supply Chain: An Insight from Chinese SMEs in the Fresh Produce Industry’.
Xiaoxiao was presented with book vouchers worth £100 and commented that she was “overwhelmed” by her win. The judges were impressed by Xiaoxiao’s excellent presentation and considered the research subject to have global potential with its focus on food quality, local production and supply, as well as environmental issues such as helping to lower carbon omissions.
Chris Barnes said: “There is a much wider range of quality research going on in the University than I realised and much of the research has the potential to be exploited locally by our businesses.”
Following the positive feedback, the University plans to open next year’s exhibition to the public to enable the wider community to learn more about how such research can benefit them and impact on their lives.
