Two budding film-makers from the University of Bedfordshire have had their work accepted to the Virgin Media Shorts competition.

Barry’s ‘No Ball Games’ and Chris’ ‘Rewind’ have racked up an impressive 850 hits between them. The two films are shot using stop-motion animation which is a painstaking and meticulous method.

The film from Barry won Best Character Design award at the University’s Animation Graduate Screening Awards. It is the story of a grumpy neighbour who is tired of children playing football against his house who meets a tragic end.

Chris’ film is a more light-hearted story based on showing the varying and often overlooked uses of a humble roll of sticky-tape, ‘Rewind’.

It looks likely to be shortlisted for the final 12 films as part of the Editor’s Choice selection out of more than 1,600 original entrants.

If successful, his film will be shown at 214 cinemas nationwide, and from those 12, one film will be chosen for the undisclosed ‘grand prize’ and win up to £30,000 in a grant to help finance their next film.

Both graduates have completed the BA (Hons) Animation Programme at the University. The pair are hoping that the exposure they have gained through this Virgin Media Shorts competition will help their long-term career prospects.
