Thousands call University hotline in rush for places

25 Aug 2009 14:01:53

Thousands of hopeful students have been calling the University of Bedfordshire clearing hotline in a bid to secure a last minute place.

But despite the unprecedented demand for places, the University is urging applicants not to panic. At the time of going to press there were still courses available, particularly in Biomedical Science, Art and Design, Media and Youth and Community Studies.

The competition to get into university has never been tougher following the Government cap on places. Applications to the University of Bedfordshire this year rose a staggering 29 per cent.

University of Bedfordshire Head of Admissions Susie King, said: “Once our clearing lines opened on results day the phone never stopped ringing. On the first day we took more than 1000 calls.

“Students wanted to know what courses were available. Some had missed their grades, some were applying late. Some wanted places confirming. We handled all sorts of enquiries.”

Since clearing opened the University has handled several thousand telephone calls. There have been 50,000 visits to the University's website with some 24,500 visits to the clearing pages.

University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon CBE, said: “Clearing continues to be a very busy time for us. Our operators are working flat out to help as many students as possible find a place. It can be a stressful time but we are here to help and guide students through the process.

“The level of interest in the University is testament to our growing reputation as an institution which welcomes all students whatever their background. We are investing millions in new state-of-the-art facilities and have climbed a massive 18 places in The Times Good University Guide 2010. There's never been a better time to come here.”
