Bharti Tailor

One ground-breaking former student at the University of Bedfordshire is not your average secretary.

Bharti Tailor, who graduated in 1997 from the University of Luton, has made history by becoming the first female to be elected to the post of Secretary General of the Hindu Forum of Britain, which is based in Park Royal, London. Indeed, she is the first woman to lead a faith organisation in the UK.

Bharti was living in Luton when she graduated in summer 1997 as a mature student in BA (Hons) Community Management.

She said: “The only way I could get a university education was because I had one on my doorstep in Luton. As I was already a mother with two youngish children, I’m appreciative of that fact.”

Bharti has maintained strong links with the University as, in the last academic year, she served as the volunteer Hindu chaplain based at the Tree House at the Luton campus.

The Hindu Forum of Britain has only been in existence for the last five years and Bharti is just its second ever Secretary General.

She was elected to her new role in May with the backing of the 320 Hindu community groups in Britain and she said: “It’s good that I have the confidence of my organisation and my term of office is for the next three years.

“I will carry on with the work started by the first Secretary General. My intention is to be more inclusive and include all the ethnic minorities from the Hindu faith.”

Bharti recently moved away from Bedfordshire to a new home in Northwood after living for the last 11 years in Bedford.

She said: “I needed to move to get closer to our offices in Park Royal and the majority of my meetings are in Central London.”
