Youngsters sampled the higher education experience as the University of Bedfordshire showed off one of its campuses.

There were 120 Year Eight and Year Nine pupils from local schools at the Bedford campus on Friday as part of the Aimhigher initiative.

Three middle schools – Marston Vale, Robert Bruce and Daubeney – sent some of their Year Eight pupils.

And five upper schools – Biddenham, Sharnbrook, John Bunyan, Mark Rutherford and Hastingsbury – each sent Year Nine pupils.

Aimhigher is a national programme which aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of young people from under-represented communities.

As well as taking part in the roadshow on the national showbus, the youngsters enjoyed a campus tour, met and talked with current undergraduate students and also had the opportunity to discuss their choices when they reach 16.

Trevor Sinclair from Aimhigher said: “We decided to make a lasting impression by combining the roadshow with a series of activities that will have real meaning.

“We gave them a complete experience based on the University campus, rather than half an hour and then back to lessons in their normal school environment. It will help them make their choices for Year 10 and their GCSEs.”

* Aimhigher also recently ran a taster day for Year Eight pupils from Marston Vale at the Bedford campus to give them a view of university life and to help raise their aspirations towards higher education.

There were 49 pupils from Marston Vale as the University again used four of its undergraduate students to support the visit.

Trevor Sinclair said: “This was another example of how the University engages with its local school partners, especially those from the younger age groups.”
