Students and the local community are being brought closer together this week through an initiative organised by the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union.
Community Week has a vision which is to see a world where everybody can contribute and help transform the lives of the community they live in.
The week’s events across the University’s five campuses include the One World Community Kitchen, where student societies and local community groups come together to bring and share food from their culture. The food on offer includes Chinese, Nepalese, English and Nigerian.
Other events include a mental health talk from the mental health charity Mind, a blood donation drive, an AIDS awareness event with the charity bbpositive and local groups will be performing at a community based cultural event. There will be performances from Tamil, Ethiopian, Congolese, Irish and Polish performers.
Event organiser and Students’ Union Vice President Union and Community Development Jay Chinnasamy, said: “The events help to bring communities together through charity, culture, education, health and food.
“We’ve had a great response from students of all cultures, many of them getting involved with the local community for the first time. It is all about creating a sense of community between students and local groups.”
