Students and the local community were brought closer together through a week of events organised by the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union.

A talk from would-be MP Esther Rantzen, performances from local community groups and a food sharing event were just some of the highlights of the week long initiative which took place across all five University campuses.

Esther Rantzen and Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins were amongst the guest speakers at an event organised by the charity bbpositive to raise awareness of AIDS. There were performances from a group of Barnfield College students and local musicians.

The One World Community Kitchen attracted dishes from across the globe, as students and community groups came together to share food from their culture. The food on offer included Chinese, Nepalese, English, African Caribbean and Nigerian.

Luton South independent candidate Joe Hall supplied the English food. He said: “It was a real pleasure mixing with so many students from all corners of the world. Food is the world’s great peacemaker – it brings everybody together!”

The week also included a blood donation drive, movie nights, a mental health talk and volunteering fair.

Event organiser and Students’ Union Vice President Union and Community Development Jay Chinnasamy, said: “The events helped bring communities together through charity, culture, education, health and food.

“It was great to welcome students, members of the local community and guest speakers to the Students’ Union for these events. The week was about creating a sense of community between students and local groups and it achieved just that.”
