Deserving University students are benefiting to the tune of £1,000 each thanks to the generosity of a national charity.
The 25 students were each presented with a cheque from the Steel Charitable Trust by its Chairman Nicholas Wright. Local businessman Derek Ludlow CBE and Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE were also on hand to congratulate the students during a lunch at the Putteridge Bury campus.
The annual award is open to local students who have a record of academic excellence and also have financial need to help support them through their final year of study. Students have to submit an application for the bursary and, to be considered, need to demonstrate academic progression and financial hardship.
One recipient, Michelle Ramsumair, a final year Advertising and Marketing Communications student, said: “I was struggling with my Uni work because I had two jobs to help support my studies financially, which is why I applied for the bursary. I was so grateful to receive the money because I can now concentrate fully on my final year and put the award towards a Master’s degree.”
Trust Chairman Nicholas Wright said: “We are pleased to work with the University by helping these students during this important year. We hope by helping them financially that they will be able to focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.”
