The University of Bedfordshire played its part as the cream of Bedford sport was honoured this week.
The Bedford Sports Awards, run by Bedford Borough Council and Sport Bedford, saw more than 350 people pack into the town’s Corn Exchange.
The likes of long jumper Greg Rutherford, Paralympic sprinter Danny Crates and heavyweight boxer Matt Skelton joined new Bedford mayor Dave Hodgson at Monday night’s ceremony.
Lucy James, daughter of senior lecturer at the Bedford campus Dawn Daley-James, won the Junior Sports Personality of the Year award.
She made her international debut when she was selected for the Great Britain junior 400m relay squad in May.
Lucy then became a youth Olympian when she competed in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Finland and reached the final in both her individual and relay events. She also achieved podium finishes in three national athletics championships during the season.

The University sponsored the Sports Team of the Year award, one of 11 categories on the night. This award went to the local Star Club Junior Rowing Squad which has six members in the Great Britain junior rowing squad.
Professor John Brewer was one of the University’s representatives and the Professor of Sport said: “We’re delighted to support the Bedford Sport Awards because we see ourselves as an integral part of the local community, forging partnerships with local teams and individuals.
“The evening was a great advert for all that’s good in Bedford sport. And we’re proud to sponsor the Sports Team of the Year award. The number and quality of nominees was a great indication of the way team sports can encourage people to take part in sport and become physically active.”
Amy Rance, sports development events co-ordinator at Bedford Borough Council, said: “I am really pleased with the awards evening and I would like to thank the sponsors for helping us support the event. We had just short of 110 nominations.
“I think that the sports awards are a really important evening as it promotes all the sporting success and achievements in Bedford from grassroots to international level.”
