Student film screenings 'Kaleidoscope'

The imagination and creativity displayed by University of Bedfordshire students knew no bounds at an innovative film night.

The recent event, organised by graduate Maksim ‘Max’ Popov with support from lecturer Joanna Callaghan and the Students’ Union, attracted around 70 students to the SU.

Billed as ‘Kaleidoscope’, it was the first time an evening of short film screenings had been officially shown in the University.

Its aim was to showcase work from all three years at the University as well as the graduates from media courses such as Media Production and Animation plus MA documentary film-makers.

Joanna said: “Max and I worked together to choose the films and we were very pleased at the response.”

Max said: “Success for us is people being interested enough in the event to show up in large numbers – and they definitely did that.

“They were able to see work from other students and how the students’ work has developed over time. There was a variety of different styles and themes explored and all of it was produced by people inside the University.”

The event was such a success that future screenings are possible and Max said: “I would love to do something like this again. I already have several students who have contacted me and want to show their work at future events.”

The event was funded by the Teaching and Learning Directorate as part of a research-informed teaching project which Joanna co-ordinates.

She said: “It’s concerned with making media practice more visible to staff and students and has been very successful.

“This same project has funded a number of other events including a weekly seminar/workshop which has seen outside researchers and professionals come in and give valuable and exciting insights into research and practice in the field.”

There has also been mentoring projects where students work with staff on research projects and four students worked with Joanna on her 2008 short film ‘A mind’s eye’.
