MTV will be taking the University of Bedfordshire by storm when it plays host to a project for aspiring film makers to turn the camera on their local communities.

Young people from across the county are encouraged to sign up for the free film training, which takes place at the University’s Theatre, in Polhill Avenue, Bedford, on 8 March. There are 100 places up for grabs.

The event is part of a national volunteering project called BOOM! that encourages 16 to 25 year olds to connect with and benefit their local community by making films about things they want to change, improve, raise awareness about or simply have a say on.

Business Development Manager at the University Sarah Waller said: “The University is delighted to have been selected to host the event. BOOM! participants can make films about where they live, what they think, their interests, or their concerns – and then consider how the films they create can help make a positive difference.”

“No previous film-making experience or knowledge is necessary, participants will get hands-on professional tuition in all the fundamental film-production skills they need to get started, from camerawork, sound recording and lighting to directing, presenting and interviewing.

“They will then be invited to put their newly-learnt skills into practice by making films through their local community youth club. Participating youth clubs will also be provided for free with camcorders and the latest film-editing hardware and software to work with.”

After the filming and editing is complete, the films will be uploaded to boom.mtv.co.uk and the best ones will be chosen to be broadcast across the nation on MTV.

Young People interested in attending the training event to learn everything there is to know about making short films, video diaries, news bulletins, reports and mini documentaries, should contact Becky Hedgcock at Clubs for Young People on 0116 275 5676 or email becky.hedgcock@clubsforyoungpeople.org.uk
