An evening of classical music and contemporary dance is promised at the University of Bedfordshire’s spring concert on 1 March.
Symphonia Academica, the University’s resident orchestra, will be performing with oboe virtuoso and former BBC Young Musician of the Year Nicholas Daniel, at the concert entitled ‘Reflections’. Together with the orchestra’s artistic director, Peter Bussereau, he will perform the premier of composer Richard Sissons’ response to Bach’s Double Concerto for Oboe and Violin (Opus 1060).
The two concertos will be accompanied by choreographed performances from Dance and Professional Practice students from the University, along with students from Luton Sixth Form College.
Senior Dance Lecturer James Hewison said: “This is the second year the spring concert has been staged blending classical music with contemporary dance and we hope to build on last year’s success.
“It is wonderful to get the students involved as it extends the work they are learning in the curriculum and offers exposure within a new professional context.”
Also on the musical menu is Mozart’s youthful Divertimento in D, Arcangelo Corelli’s invigorating “Christmas” concerto Grosso, the melodic St Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst and Karl Jenkins’s dynamic Palladio.
Mr Bussereau added: “The concert title ‘Reflections’ stems from the enthusiasm Richard Sisson’s has for Bach’s beautiful violin and oboe concerto and for his desire to write a companion piece. To combine the talents of the student dancers with the stunning playing of Nicholas Daniel and Richard’s compositional magic is an exciting prospect for us.”
The performance at the University of Bedfordshire Theatre, in Polhill Avenue, Bedford, gets under way at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 per person (£10 with concessions and £8 for children) and can be ordered in advance from Bedford Box Office on 01234 269519.
