Budding artists, poets, photographers and performers in Luton are being encouraged to showcase their talents by entering a number of competitions being organised as part of B:Fest – Luton’s very own arts festival.
The festival which runs from 22 May to 11 June 2009, will include a series of arts competitions in a bid to unearth hidden talent in the town.
The ‘Play in a Day’ competition will showcase the creativity of performers, actors, dancers and musicians who will be tasked with writing, choreographing and performing their very own play, just 24 hours before the curtain goes up. Judges will give each group a title, prop and line of dialogue from which they must produce their own play.
Groups can register for the Play in a Day competition up until 24 May and costs £15 per group of six. The competition will begin at 7.30pm on 5 June with performances getting under way at 6pm on 6 June.
Meanwhile, photographers and artists of all ages are being encouraged to submit their work to a special competition which will see the best pieces being exhibited at The Mall Arndale and at the University of Bedfordshire. The theme of the competition is ‘conflict and peacemaking’ and entries will be accepted from 6-24 April.
Local school children will also have a chance to show off their talents with a story competition. They are invited to submit a story, fiction or real life, based on this year's festival theme 'inspiration'. The piece should be no longer than one side of A4 paper and entries must be submitted before 30 April.
Shortlisted entries for the photography and short story competitions will be evaluated by a panel of judges which will include presenters from BBC Three Counties Radio and journalists from the Herald and Post. The overall winners will receive prizes from B:Fest organisers.
Successful contributions will be read out or highlighted on BBC Three Counties Radio and published in the Herald and Post as well as on the B:Fest website www.lutonartsfestival.org. Winning materials will be featured in a booklet that will be distributed via Waterstones, public libraries and schools.
Application forms for all three competitions can be requested by emailing enquiries@lutonartsfestival.org. For further information about the festival visit www.lutonartsfestival.org or e-mail Robin Saklatvala at festival@beds.ac.uk
