The role universities can play in rebuilding the economy will be the focus of a two-day conference which will be attended by university and industry chiefs next week.
The first conference of the Association of Universities in the East of England (AUEE) takes place on 14 and 15 January at Cranfield University, and will examine how universities can help with the recovery of the regional economy.
AUEE Chair and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire, Professor Les Ebdon said: “It’s quite clear that this latest recession is more serious than experts had imagined, so we have changed the focus of our first conference to look at the vital role universities can play in getting this region on the road to recovery. We have lined up leading economists to identify the effects of the recession and the role universities and public partners can play in moving our region back into growth.
“Universities have been working with industry for some time to train their employees to have the right skills for industry, share emerging trends and technologies via applied research, and consult with them to ensure the curriculum is relevant for today’s jobs market. Indeed the contribution universities make to the UK economy has been well documented, so it’s only right that we come together with the business community and Government agencies to establish how we can work together for the benefit of our region.”
Speakers at the conference include:
The conference will feature interactive sessions and workshops where delegates will identify the effects of the recession, the implications for the eastern region and measures that can be implemented to drive forward recovery.
Delegates will arrive at 9.30am on Wednesday 14 January at Cranfield University. The conference will come to a close 1.30pm on Thursday 15 January.
AUEE was established in 2000 as a membership organisation which brings together the 12 higher education institutions in the region to serve the needs of the region more effectively and to engage with the developing regional agenda.
