Official opening of UCMK by Hazel Blears

The University of Bedfordshire is helping to bring higher education to Milton Keynes.

Bedfordshire is validating degrees at a new University Centre Milton Keynes (UCMK) which was officially opened by Government minister  today (19 Jan).

UCMK has been developed from a collaboration led by Milton Keynes College and Milton Keynes Partnership, working with universities across the region. It is based in the business district at Silbury Boulevard.

The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Mrs Blears has hailed the new University as ‘a seed from which great things will grow’. She said: “Education is the key to helping people fulfil their potential and enabling the country to compete on the world stage. An undergraduate university is the next natural step for a city with ambitions to be one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.

“This University Centre isn’t imposed from above; it’s rooted in local ambition. And although in the long term the University aims to reach out to the world, it is also committed to staying true to the community’s aspirations, reinforcing a sense of local ownership and pride that will help it flourish.”

Dean of Partnerships at the University of Bedfordshire Professor David Barrett said: “We are proud to be working with UCMK to offer degree-level qualifications to the Milton Keynes community.

“We work with partners across the region to develop and deliver further and higher education to make opportunities available to local people. We are also currently leading the regional Expression of Interest bid to HEFCE's University Challenge initiative, which sets out the Government's plans to open up opportunities for towns and cities to bid for new university campuses and higher education centres.”

UCMK offers a wide range of courses including Art, Design and Media, Business Management and Marketing, Accountancy and Finance, Computing and Information Technology, teacher training, social science and psychology, counselling, and Sport.
