A Research Professor in Media and Politics at the University of Bedfordshire has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to Social Sciences.
Professor Ivor Gaber was awarded an Academician by the Academy of Social Sciences at a special reception ceremony held at the University’s Putteridge Bury campus yesterday (20 Jan).
The Academy promotes excellence and encourages the advancement of social sciences in the UK to the Government, as well as public and private sector organisations. Academician status is conferred to scholars and practitioners for their outstanding achievement in their field and commitment to the aims of the Academy.
Vice Chancellor at the University Professor Les Ebdon said: “I am delighted Professor Gaber has been elected to the Academy of Social Sciences where he will join the very best social scientists in the UK in developing and evaluating policy and influencing people’s lives for the better. It is significant recognition of his achievements and contributions, as well as the University’s reputation in the field of Social Sciences.”
Professor Gaber is a broadcaster, researcher and consultant. His main field of academic expertise is political communications. He has worked as a news and current affairs reporter, producer and editor for BBC, Channel 4, ITN and Sky News, Radio 4, Radio 5 Live and the BBC World Service. As well as writing for The Guardian, The New Statesman, and Times Higher Education, he has published numerous journal articles and books including: Culture Wars: The Media and the British Left, and Westminster Tales: The 21st Century Crisis in Political Journalism. He is also an Editorial Board Member of the British Journalism Review and Tribune newspaper.
He has also served as a media consultant to a variety of organisations, governments and international bodies including various UK Government departments, the European Union, the Council of Europe and UNESCO (the United Nations’ Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation).
