Year 12 pupils from Luton Sixth Form were invited to the University of Bedfordshire today to experience the workings of a university, and gain a greater understanding of the UCAS procedure.
The pupils were invited to attend a day of lectures, campus tours and after lunch were able to field their own questions to current students. Pupil Percy Mguya said: ‘the day was helpful as I now know things about financing your studies that I didn’t before. It was amazing.’
The day appeared to make a lasting impression on many of the visitors, in some cases influencing their choices for their UCAS applications. Gradie Panupanu said: ‘I thought it was really good, I think I’m going to put the University of Bedfordshire as a higher option on my UCAS forms.’
The day was judged to be a success by all involved, particularly by Luton Sixth Form tutor Andrew Britton saying: ‘I think today gave them a very real experience, I think it opened their eyes to it more and they feel more prepared.’ This opinion was echoed by colleague Patricia Larkham as she said: ‘I think the introductory talk where they were speaking about their UCAS application was very helpful to get them started on that. Overall it was a good day.’
As one of the local colleges to the University’s Park Square campus, Head of Student Recruitment Lal Joshi said: ‘It’s important to us to make sure local pupils know about the University and at least consider us as an option. It’s also vital to gain an understanding of university as early as possible, to prepare yourself as best as you can’.
