It was a case of so near, and yet so far, for one industrious award-winning international student at the University of Bedfordshire. Ashwini Arcot was runner-up in the national finals of the International Student Employee of the Year awards.
The 23 year old from India, who began her MSc in Human Resource Management in February 2008, had already won the regional finals for London and the South East for her work with the University and two other organisations.
The national award was recognition for her work with Milton Keynes-based Amazon where she worked in the production department before being promoted. She deputised for the team leader and also came up with several innovative ideas.
She was also involved in Luton Training and Mentoring based in Marsh Farm, Luton, which concentrates on mentoring ‘challenging’ children.
This voluntary work involved general administration tasks and liaising with other organisations. One project ended with a dance demonstration in front of councillors from both Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
Her role with the University in summer 2008 saw her act as a guide for international students and perform duties in the various graduation ceremonies.
The announcement was made at the NASES (National Association of Student Employment Services) conference in Wolverhampton. NASES is the professional body for Job Shops around the country.
Job Shops, which offer work experience to students while they are studying, act as a cross between job centres and recruitment agencies run by the University’s Careers Office and provide a free service to both students and potential employers alike.
The University of Bedfordshire’s Job Shop manager Priya Chauhan picked up the national award on behalf of Ashwini.
Priya said: “One of the employers who was judging said Ashwini came ‘so close’ to winning the national finals as it was between her and another student.
“She is a role model for all of our students and her award shows there is a high skill level and work ethic among international and EU students.
“The Job Shop is also a good resource for companies looking to expand their business abroad as we have a range of students from countries all over the world.”
