Cash is continuing to be made available to the University of Bedfordshire to support the residents of Marsh Farm to enhance their education and training.
The Marsh Farm Community Development Trust’s (MFCDT) Bursary Fund project was launched in November 2007 to help residents improve their employment prospects.
The University has now received a fresh £250,000 from the MFCDT, the second instalment for the Marsh Farm Bursary Fund, following the award of an earlier £500,000.
Ishaq Kazi, NDC (New Deal for Communities) co-ordinator, said: “We are grateful to the University and in particular David Barrett, Dean of Partnerships, whose support was instrumental in developing and obtaining approval for the project from Government Office East.”
The Bursary Fund is open to Marsh Farm residents who are over 16, unemployed or on low pay. The funding can be used for tuition and exam fees for higher and further education, apprenticeships, training, travel costs and work-related equipment.
The fund supports the Government’s widening participation policy by helping to make higher education and training available to those who wish to return to education and the labour market, regardless of their background.
To date, the Marsh Farm Bursary Fund has awarded 320 bursaries and has proved to be a big hit among the local residents.
One of the beneficiaries, Nicky Glasgow, said: “The Bursary Fund has changed my life and I’m currently working full-time due to the training received from the Bursary Fund.”
Another, Jackie Palmer, said: “I am now coming to the end of my second year BA (Hons) in Childcare and Adolescent Studies at the University of Bedfordshire.
“Fingers crossed, I am well on track to a first-class degree and the career I have always wanted thanks to the Bursary Fund.”
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, said: “I’m delighted to receive this money on behalf of the University of Bedfordshire which emphasises our commitment to working with our neighbourhood and local community.”
The Marsh Farm Bursary Fund Project Manager, Parveen Mirza, said: “We are very proud of our working relationship with the University of Bedfordshire and we’d like to thank the University for their participation in MFCDT’s programme.”
