You can now take a sneak peek at what the new campus centre in Luton will look like thanks to the wonder of modern technology.

A visual fly-through of the near £22 million project is available to view at: http://www.beds.ac.uk/aboutus/facts/phase1b/flythru

The building, which is the Phase 1B development on the Park Square campus in Luton, is where the reprographics department used to be between the Learning Resources Centre and the Vicarage Street building.

Ash Carline is the University’s capital projects manager who is in charge of the Phase 1B development.

He said: “Using the design of the architects (RMJM Architects), the fly-through is a visualisation of what the building will be like when it’s fully operational in September 2010.

“The new campus centre will hopefully form the hub of the campus with formal and informal teaching spaces, along with a number of new student services and it will also house the senior management team.”

The new building will be the home of all student-facing activities and services for students on the Luton campus.

As the building will be the main entrance to the campus, a reception desk will replace the existing facilities in Park Square ground floor.

It will also house a state-of-the-art lecture theatre and social learning spaces as well as new restaurant and other catering facilities.

The Students’ Union will also be part of this new building and will have its own support services, executive offices and a bar.

The senior management team, including Vice Chancellor Les Ebdon CBE, will have its offices in this new building for immediate accessibility to students and staff.

The adjacent buildings will also be linked to the new building via high-level walkways and a glazed full height link.

The crane which will be used for the Phase 1B construction was also erected over the weekend.

Ash said: “The frame of the building will be going up between now and Christmas. It will grow out of the ground pretty quickly in the next couple of months.”
