There was a perfect way to end the school year for dance enthusiasts at the University of Bedfordshire.

Youngsters from across the three counties of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire joined together for the third ‘Gifted and Talented Dance Summer School’ at the University’s Bedford campus.

With the support of the University’s Division of Performing Arts and English in association with Excellence East, the annual summer school allowed youngsters to embark on a university experience before they enter higher education.

The summer school was attended by 15 youngsters ranging from Year 10 GCSE dance students to A2-level pupils from a number of thriving dance departments across the region.

These included Sir Frank Markham Community School, Redborne Upper School, Mark Rutherford, Sandy Upper School, Sharnbrook Upper School and Community College and the Knights Templar School from Baldock.

The dancers embarked on a packed daily schedule which included a dance technique class (with performer and lecturer in dance Amalia Garcia), approaches to dance-making with Helen Mansell (experienced dance teacher and lecturer) and a choreographic workshop with Lisa Spackman (senior lecturer in dance and artistic director of Bedfordshire Youth Dance Company).

The youngsters on the last day of the intensive week-long summer school shared their choreographic and performance work with teachers, friends and family.

The event was a big success and one A2-level Sharnbrook student said afterwards: “The week has really inspired me; I can’t wait to get to university now.”
