Two new professors are looking to flex their muscles when they start at the University in September.

Professor John Brewer is the new Professor of Sport and Professor Mark Lewis is Professor of Exercise Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

They will take up their posts on 1 September and both will be based in the new Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, while also making a significant contribution to the work of the Institute for Sport and Physical Activity Research.

Professor Brewer is currently Director of Sport Science and Communications at GlaxoSmithKline. Previously, he was Director of the National Sports Injury and Human Performance Centre at Lilleshall from 1993-2004 and was Head of Sport Science at the Football Association from 1988-1993.

Professor Brewer has a high profile in the media and popular press particularly in relation to his expertise in fitness testing, running, endurance and sports nutrition.

Dr Lewis is currently Reader in Cell Biology at University College London where he is Director of Research Operations at the Eastman Dental Institute.

He has been responsible for the generation of £1.5 million in research funding from a range of prestigious funding sources.

His specialism in muscle physiology will add strength to the current sport and exercise physiology research group in the Institute of Sport and Physical Activity Research.

Dean of Faculty of Sport and Education, Professor Cara Aitchison, said: “I hope you will join with me in welcoming our two new professors to the faculty and in working with them to help deliver our research ambitions.”
