Steve will help the University to develop and sustain its high reputation for accessibility and inclusivity. It is committed to widening participation for groups under represented in higher education and pursues this through a number of initiatives.
Steve is currently working on the widening participation strategic assessment for Hefce due to be submitted in June.
University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Les Ebdon, said: “I am very pleased that Steve has taken on this role. It’s recognition of his outstanding contribution to the University over many years and his commitment to widening access to higher education. He is the ideal choice.”
Speaking about the appointment, Steve said: “I am delighted to have been asked to take on this role. It’s an area I care about deeply. Everything I have done in the 26 years I have been at the university has been crucially involved in opening up access to higher education to those for whom it is difficult.
“I regard the appointment as recognition of my commitment to this area and recognition of its importance here at the University. By widening participation we are enabling people to transform their lives – that is at the heart of our mission.”
Steve is an Open University graduate who joined Luton College of Higher Education in 1983 where he lectured in social sciences and public Administration.
He led its programme of Access courses for a number of years before taking on the role of Head of Admissions in the new University of Luton (as the college became).
Since then, Steve has become ever more closely involved in widening participation at a local and regional level - as Associate Dean of Partnerships for the University of Bedfordshire and as Area Director for Aimhigher, a national programme which helps young people from social groups currently under-represented in higher education. A passionate believer in lifelong learning, he has just completed a Masters in Literature.
