Media sport specialist Garry Whannel took part in an international conference on comedy.

Garry, professor of media cultures at the University, spoke about the American political satirist Mort Sahl, famous for his innovative and influential style of informal monologue comedy about political and social issues.

Garry said: “I’ve been interested in stand-up monologue comedy for nearly 50 years – ever since I first heard Mort in the early sixties.

“I’ve researched the history of political humour for some time but it’s never been my priority because of my specialism in media sport. But I’ve always been interested in popular culture as the place where everyday common sense and organised political discourse encounter each other.”

The third Annual Conference on Comedy was held at the University of Salford. Garry’s paper was called “Is there anyone I haven’t offended?”

Garry also recently contributed to a symposium at the University of Brighton on the work of novelist David Peace and presented a paper on the novel and film The Damned United, based on the career of football manager Brian Clough.

In August he is speaking at the University of Malaga summer school in Spain.
