Kathryn Ellis is celebrating the award of a PhD for her study on how discretion is used on the front-line of welfare services.

She was awarded her PhD for a selection of her previously published work, together with a critical overview of its original contribution to knowledge.

Kathryn, who is Sub-Dean Quality Enhancement for the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and a member of the Institute of Applied Social Research, has worked at the University for 17 years.

She said: “I’ve done the writing and researching for this alongside my teaching and administration work. In the early days of hectic growth in the University, remaining research active meant doing much of this in my own time.

“I managed to keep this up and it has become increasingly easier as the University has been able to give greater priority to research activity.”
