A University of Bedfordshire student has missed out on a place in the finals of Miss England.

Laura Brown, who is studying specialist make-up and design at the University, had already been crowned Miss Northampton.

The 21 year old from Barton Seagrave, Kettering, said: “I had a fantastic day and enjoyed the whole experience. And I’m still Miss Northamptonshire for the next year.”

The hopefuls had to change clothes twice during the day-long Miss England semi-finals at Champney Springs in Leicester, first into a sporty outfit of shorts and vest top for group photographs and then the dress they had brought for the competition's ‘recycled’ theme.

Laura wore a long pink silky dress she borrowed from a family friend as all the entrants had to bring a dress they had made, borrowed or bought from a charity shop. She had to parade in the different outfits and had an individual interview.

Laura is not planning to enter the competition next year but would consider other modelling work.

Proud mum Jo said: “All the family were very proud that Laura got to the semi-finals considering that 2000 girls applied.

“They only picked 12 out of 60 beautiful girls to go through, two of which were the ones with the most public votes and the most money raised for the charity, so that only left ten to choose.”
