Top-level athletics legend Derek Redmond offered advice to the next generation at a masterclass hosted by the University of Bedfordshire.

Redmond gave a motivational masterclass at the Bedford campus on Monday to Year 12 students from the East of England.

It was arranged by the University in association with Excellence East and more than 280 students from schools in Beds, Herts, Cambs, Suffolk, Essex and Northants attended the event.

Redmond was a top 400m and 4x400m relay runner in his pomp and won gold medals at World, European and Commonwealth level. He famously pulled up lame in the semi-finals of the 400m at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona but resolutely battled on to hobble around the remaining 250m.

Diana Saulsbury from the University of Bedfordshire said: “The day was aimed at first year A-level students and designed to help kick-start their studies in Sport and PE.

“Derek captivated the audience as he talked about his athletics triumphs and how, with strong self belief, he overcame Olympic despair and embarked on a totally new and rewarding career.”
