The list of countries interested in using the University of Bedfordshire’s ‘world-class’ facilities is growing by the week.
Bermuda is the second country to have toured the Bedford campus with a view to using the University’s facilities, following the recent Rwandan visit.
A number of European, African and Far East countries have been lured by BOOST, an organisation set up in an attempt to bring the benefit of the Olympics and Paralympics to Bedfordshire.
Bermuda’s representative was Philip Guishard, secretary general of the country’s Olympic association, and his two-day visit took in the Bedford campus as well as several venues throughout the region.
He was at Polhill to assess the accommodation and sports science/sports facilities which the University has on offer via the 2012 facilities training camps brochure.
Guishard has been ‘Chef de Mission’ for Bermuda for a number of Commonwealth and Olympic Games. He undertook teacher training in this country and subsequently studied at postgraduate level at Hull.
He now has further visits relating to London 2012 to other European countries.
Professor David Barrett, who is a member of BOOST, said on behalf of the University: “There is no doubt that every leg of the trip was well received.
“Philip was circumspect but complimentary with his reflections on the visit but he was clearly impressed with what we had to offer, including the way we conveyed this.”
Bermuda could have anywhere between eight to 15 participants, plus support/officials, excluding their Paralympic contingent.
As well as Rwanda and Bermuda, a number of other countries have expressed an interest in pre-Games training opportunities locally.
