One of the leading cancer specialists in the world has given a fascinating insight into his work.

Professor Karol Sikora was the speaker for the third annual joint seminar between the University of Bedfordshire and the English-Speaking Union at the Putteridge Bury campus on Thursday, 18 June.

Dr Sikora is considered to be one of the world’s foremost experts on cancer treatment having been chief of the World Health Organisation’s cancer programme between 1997 and 1999.

He is currently Dean of the University of Buckingham’s medical school – the first private medical school in the country.

The visit of Professor Sikora was arranged by Dr Tony Wood, a former Vice Chancellor of the University.

Dr Wood said: “Professor Sikora gave a masterful overview of the modern developments in the treatment of cancer, demonstrating very clearly why he is held in such high regard for his knowledge and research expertise in this very sensitive area.”

The English-Speaking Union is an international educational charity founded in 1918 to promote “international understanding and friendship through the use of the English language.”

An equally prestigious speaker has been confirmed at next year’s joint event. He is Professor Sir Liam Donaldson, the current Chief Medical Officer for England who acts as the principal advisor to the Government on health matters and is one of the most senior officials in the NHS.
