Animation film students from the University of Bedfordshire celebrated their achievements recently with an ‘Oscar’ style awards ceremony.
As part of B:Fest, the Luton Arts Festival, the BA (Hons) Animation Programme screened its first set of six graduation films followed by the first ever Bedfordshire Animation Graduate Screening Awards (BAGSA).
The animations, all under five minutes long, had a range of humorous, dramatic and serious themes including surreal stop motion about sticky tape, a 3D computer animation about a murderous pub landlord and a 2D animation about knife crime.
Categories included Set Design, Character Design Supporting Animators and 2D and 3D awards. The awards were presented by a range of industry professionals and university academics including: Alan Lewis from Polywood Studios, Piers Godden from GB Animation Co and Tereza Stehlikova, Animation researcher from the Royal College of Art.
Mark Collington, the Animation Programme Leader at the University, was delighted with the first BAGSA ceremony. “We were extremely proud to present and reward up and coming new animation talent”, he said. “The evening was an excellent opportunity for prospective students and the public to view the animation work. It also enabled everyone to network with like-minded practitioners and gain an insight into the intensive but tremendously rewarding animation work process.”
The films and winners included:
Rewind Chris Butcher Winner - Stop Motion
No Ball Games Barry O’Brien Winner – Character Design
Arthur Pendragon Richard Skelton Winner - Narrative
A Peaceful Existence JC McKinlay-Adams Winner – 2D
Miss Me Now, Text Me Later Shannel Joseph Winner – 3D
What Goes Around Ben Melville Winner – Set Design
Chris Butcher's graduation stop motion animation 'Rewind' has been selected as part of the 'Editor's Choice' on Virgin Media Shorts 2009. Barry O'Brien's graduation stop motion animation 'No Ball Games' has also been selected on Virgin Media Shorts 2009.
The first set of graduate animation films will now be submitted to the numerous international animation festivals, starting with Holland Animation Film Festival in November.
